Lithium Batteries for Boaters
ATTEND IN-PERSON OR ONLINE This class is being offered in a hybrid format, with participants being able to choose in advance if they will attend in person or online via Zoom.
THE COURSE This course is based on the instructors recent experience in building a Lithium battery system for the KissIntel. Only recently have Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries become practical for ordinary boaters, let alone even vaguely cost-effective. Even so, there are major obstacles to avoid when attempting to replace the more common lead-acid battery versions. You will learn the questions to ask when engaging electrical professionals or doing the work yourself. Topics covered will include safety considerations, LiFePO4 advantages/disadvantages, the critical Battery Management System (BMS), suitability of existing charging systems, and engine starting vs. house bank application. The class is 2 hours in length and the DC Marine Electrical course is a strongly suggested prerequisite.
A TRADITION For nearly 15 years, the Olympia Yacht Club has been conducting classes for our members and other local boaters. The 2024 series of electrical-related courses has now been scheduled, and will be conducted in person at the OYC clubhouse in Olympia. One of our foundational principles is to encourage the science of good seamanship and navigation and thus we are opening these classes to any boater wishing to learn more on these topics.
OUR INSTRUCTOR The developer and instructor of these classes is past commodore Jerry Budelman, whose qualifications include retired Intel executive, adjunct professor of engineering, holder of over 20 patents and a lifetime instructor and inventor. He loves to teach with an interactive and participatory style.
REGISTER EARLY Space is limited, so register early! We ask that you register at least one week before the class if possible. Late registrations will be accepted - space allowing - but late registrants may not receive a copy of the course material. A PDF file is also available.
HOSPITALITY Coffee, tea and other basic refreshments will be provided.
